Updated: June 18, 2026 · By Mundial24h Editorial
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway across the United States, Canada and Mexico. After the opening week of group-stage fixtures, 24 of 104 matches have been completed — every group has now kicked off at least one matchday. Here is our editorial recap of the biggest results, surprise packages and what the tables tell us about the road to the Round of 32.
Headline results
- Mexico 2–0 South Africa (Estadio Azteca) — The hosts opened the tournament in front of a roaring Mexico City crowd. El Tri controlled the Azteca and take an early Group A lead alongside South Korea.
- United States 4–1 Paraguay (MetLife Stadium) — A statement win for the co-hosts in the New York metro area. Four goals underline American attacking intent in Group D.
- Germany 7–1 Curaçao (Gillette Stadium, Boston) — The most lopsided scoreline so far. Die Mannschaft sent an early warning to Group E rivals Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
- England 4–2 Croatia (Estadio Azteca) — The Three Lions exploded in Mexico City with four goals, putting early pressure on Group L rivals Ghana and Panama.
- Argentina 3–0 Algeria (SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles) — The defending champions began their title defence with authority in Group J.
- France 3–1 Senegal (BC Place, Vancouver) — Les Bleus recovered from a competitive first half to take three points in Group I.
- Colombia 3–1 Uzbekistan (Gillette Stadium, Boston) — Los Cafeteros opened Group K with a convincing win; Portugal and Congo DR drew 1–1 the day before.
- Norway 4–1 Iraq (Estadio Azteca) — Norway announced themselves with a four-goal performance in Mexico City.
Upsets & tight contests
Not every favourite had it easy. Brazil drew 1–1 with Morocco in Atlanta, leaving both sides on a point in Group C behind Scotland, who beat Haiti 1–0 in Houston. Netherlands and Japan shared a 2–2 thriller in Miami, while Spain were held 0–0 by Cape Verde in Kansas City — a result that could define a competitive Group H.
Canada's 1–1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina at SoFi Stadium means Group B is wide open after Qatar and Switzerland also drew 1–1 in Dallas. Portugal were held 1–1 by Congo DR in Group K, leaving Colombia top after their win over Uzbekistan. In Group L, Ghana beat Panama 1–0 to join England on three points — but Croatia's loss to England leaves the 2018 finalists with ground to make up.
